Monologue for a Murderer, a new play based on the 2002 shooting of 17 people at a German high school, opens at La Mama Courthouse Theatre on October 29 for a limited season.
Award-winning playwright Kate Rice imagines a confrontation between the ghost of the shooter and the school principal, recreates moments of pathos and black humour in the lead-up to the event, and questions her own arrogance at attempting to find meaning in someone else’s tragedy.

On 26 April 2002, in the German city of Erfurt, 19-year-old Robert Steinhäuser entered his former high school with two semi-automatic weapons and killed 17 people. On the tenth anniversary, a writer visited Erfurt to research the event for a play.
Kate Rice (writer Sweetest Things – nominated Best Play 2013 Australian Writers’ Guild awards) imagines what happened, what might have happened, and the meaning of the Erfurt school shooting.
